I am a multi-disciplinary artist whose work explores the complexities of cross-cultural identity. My current practice spans oil painting, mixed media, installation, and print making.
I am interested in the relationship between the Middle Eastern region and Europe, and their respective intertwined social and cultural histories. I take inspiration from historic European portraiture, as well as motifs and symbols (both real and imagined) from the ‘Oriental’ world.
Visits to Bahraini archaeological sites as a child left me with a fascination for history and the silent magic which resides there. I am drawn to archaeological relics, ancient superstitions, and belief systems and enjoy finding connections between disparate themes, mythologies, objects, and figures.
Elements are woven together; layered and juxtaposed to create narratives rooted in the mythical which hint at lost histories and folklore in the ever-shifting landscape.
Flora and fauna of the natural world appear symbolically throughout my work. Migratory and native birds are a recurring theme and act as a metaphor for my travel between ‘homes’.
My installations often incorporate symbolically meaningful materials collected on my travels and bought in souks; from paper made locally in Bahrain from date palm fronds, to old fishing nets donated by fishermen along the Sussex coast.
